SISTER MARIA LUZ ORTEGA, STJ
|
Sr.
Maria de la Luz Ortega, STJ, of the
Society of St. Teresa of Jesus, was called home to be with the Lord on
February 20, 2011 at the age of 78, after a brief illness. She was born in
Mexico City, Mexico, on March 19, 1932, the fourth of six children. Sr.
Luz is survived by two sisters and several nieces and nephews, all in
Mexico. In 1953 she entered the Society in San Antonio, and made her
profession of perpetual vows there in March, 1961. She taught for several
years at St. Teresa's Academy in San Antonio, as well as in Jennings,
Louisiana and in Uvalde, Texas. In 1970 Sr. Luz received a Bachelor's
degree in business administration from St. Mary's University in San
Antonio, and served as treasurer for many years, for the province and for
schools and communities in Texas, Louisiana, Florida, and Managua,
Nicaragua. In her retirement years, Sr. Luz spent endless hours doing
plastic canvas crafts for friends and benefactors. A loyal fan of the
Spurs until the end, she especially loved to sew through the evening while
watching the game.
