IN MEMORY

Sr. Grace Napoles, STJ died on June 3, 2002 at Southeast Baptist Hospital in San Antonio, Texas at age 78. She  had been hospitalized there since Friday evening, May 31, after suffering a heart attack. In spite of the wonderful, devoted attention of the intensive care staff, she passed away around 4:00 AM.

Sr. Grace was born on April 1, 1924 in Camagüey, Cuba, and had been in the United States since 1941, proud to be an American citizen. Her family -- three sisters and one brother -- still reside in Cuba.

Throughout her years as a Teresian, Sister Grace served in Ciego de Avila (Cuba), New Orleans, Uvalde, and San Antonio. Wherever she has been, she was known for her spirit of sacrifice and service. Even though she herself suffered a stroke some years ago, she did not falter in her service to the infirm and elderly sisters of St. Teresa's Community in San Antonio. Her warmth and compassion shall be greatly missed by all who knew her. We thank God for the witness of her life, and pray that she may be enjoying the presence of her loving God.

The Sisters of St. Teresa's Community wish to thank the staff of Southeastern Baptist Hospital for the exquisite care they rendered to Sr. Grace.

Friends and Sisters from Texas and Louisiana gathered at St. Teresa's Convent for the Rosary and Mass of Resurrection on Wednesday, June 5. In their last farewell, many expressed their memories of Sr. Grace -- especially of her service, always anticipating the needs of others; her kindness to all; simplicity and humility; warmth, laughter, and tears; her devotion to Mary, saying the Rosary with a tape recording when speech became limited because of the stroke.  Fr. Joe Lopez and Fr. Augustin Amanzeh celebrated the liturgy, and Fr. Joe delivered a warm and beautiful tribute to Sr. Grace's  grace-ful presence in his homily.

Those who had the privilege of experiencing Sr. Grace's gifts agreed that even in her silence, she spoke eloquently to all of us. Thank you, Sr. Grace. We shall surely miss you.
