IN MEMORY
Sr. Maria del Carmen Martin Menoyo, STJ
of the Society of St.
Teresa of Jesus, died on August 6, 2008 at St. Teresa's Convent after several
years of courageously battling cancer. she was 78. Sr. Carmen was
born in Madrid, Spain, on July 15, 1930, one of ten children. She entered
the Society of St. Teresa of Jesus in Tortosa, Spain in 1951. In 1960 she
came to the U.S. and began teaching at St. Louis Cathedral School in New
Orleans, and in 1965 she came to San Antonio and taught at St. Teresa's Academy.
She was soon sent to Rome as General Delegate of Education for the
Society. From 1973 to 1976 Sr. Carmen served as principal of Colegio
Teresiano in Managua, Nicaragua, rebuilding the school after the 1972
earthquake. Later she returned to Rome as General Delegate of Education,
serving another 12 years on the General Council. Sr. Carmen also served as
Coordinator of the US Province for 6 years, and as Coordinator of the Sacred
Heart Province in Spain for another 6 years. In 2001 she came to St.
Teresa's Convent, where she served as treasurer until her death. Sr.
Carmen is survived by three brothers and five sisters, all of whom live in Spain
except for her brother Father Arturo Martin Menoyo, S.J., who lives in Japan.
We remember Sr. Carmen for her many gifts, her courage, dedication and fidelity,
and above all, her her passion for Teresian education, especially in service to
the poor and underprivileged.
