Sr. Gisela Andino, STJ, of the Society of St.
Teresa of Jesus, passed away peacefully on November 7, 2008 at St. Teresa's
Convent, San Antonio at the age of 91, after a brief illness. She was born in
Havana, Cuba, on September 7, 1917, the fourth of five children. Her three
sisters and her younger brother are all deceased, but she is survived by many
nieces and nephews. Sr. Gisela entered the Society of St. Teresa of Jesus in
Havana in 1936, and made her Pre-Novititate and Novitiate in San Antonio, where
she made her profession of perpetual vows in 1942. As early as 1939, she began
her long teaching career in high school and elementary school in San Antonio and
in Jennings, LA and the New Orleans area. Even in retirement she continued
helping seminarians with Spanish at St. Joseph's Seminary in Covington,
Louisiana. In 1960 she received a B.A. from Our Lady of the Lake in San Antonio,
and in the 1970's earned a Masters in Liberal Arts from Xavier University, and a
Masters in Religious Education from Notre Dame Seminary, both in New Orleans.
Sr. Gisela never finished her education, however; her love of science and
theology kept her studying and learning her whole life long. After retirement
she continued taking courses in Greek and Old Testament studies at St. Joseph's
Seminary, and even until her last year she remained an avid student of
everything theological as well as the technical aspects of the weather. Sr.
Gisela remained active and independent wherever she was, tending her beautiful
flowers and helping around the house with dishes, the phone and many other
duties. Her fidelity to prayer and to what she heard in Scripture made her a
faithful servant indeed, and we shall surely miss her. |
