IT PAYS TO TEE-OFF FOR LITERACYOn Saturday October 11, 2008, the St. Henry de Osso Family Project hosted their 6th Annual Golf Scramble. The event was a huge success! Proceeds raised at the event totaled over $7500 or a 100% increase over last year’s earnings! Dr. Steve Garza, key organizer of the event, was pleased to report that there were a total of 54 participants in the event, which represented a 50% increase over last year. “The turn-out was great and the support we received from the community was phenomenal,” said Melody Tijerina, recently appointed St. Henry De Osso Community Relations Director. The majority of participants were local supporters including community leaders such as Jim Buckner of Uvalde Memorial Hospital, David A. Ortiz of Uvalde National Bank, Tony Arce of AEP, Wendell Brown Superintendent UCISD, Merlin and Greg Maxey, of Maxey Energy, Kim Fulton and Mark Huffstutler of Huffstutler Properties. However, a good number of participants traveled from distant Texas cities such as Corpus Christi, Austin and Victoria to join in on the fun! In addition to participants, volunteers of all ages arrived bright and early to assist in the event. Local teenagers from Sacred Heart Confirmation class helped with random chores. One husband and wife, who do not own a car, woke up very early and walked to the golf course before 7:00AM to offer their assistance. A grandmother to one of the children tutored by St. Henry ran errands before sunrise the day of the event and left to report to her job where she was scheduled to work a full day’s labor. “We are always touched by the support and show of gratitude we receive from our clients. It makes us all feel so good to be involved in such a worthy project,” reflected Maria Vela, President of the St. Henry De Osso Board. Volunteer and community support abounded at the scramble. The Guadalupanas, a faith-based women’s club offered their support by making homemade tacos in the early morning hours before the event. Local restaurants, Ofelia’s, EL Herradero de Jalisco, Golden Corral, and Townhouse Restaurant made respective donations of tacos, cookies, beans and rice. John Sysco Foods, HEB, Super S Food Store helped supply needed items as well! Sponsorship and gifts were received from a wide array of retailers, merchants, and financial institutions in the community. Please be sure to see the St. Henry de Osso Family Project thank you ad for a complete list of all of the sponsors. Participants were organized into two-men teams. The best score at each hole was recorded for the team. Although no one was able to claim the $10,000 a hole-in-one prize, there were lots of winners. James Renfro and Eddie Rodriguez claimed first prize. Second prize went to father and son team, Ernest Garza and Ernest Garza II. Third prize was awarded to Pepe and Jay Salinas. Jay also won the closest to the pin competition. As for longest drive, it was Logan Bostic who took the prize. Congratulations to the winners and to all the participants for supporting such a worthy cause! Overall, the St. Henry de Osso Family Project was delighted with the success of the Golf Scramble. Sister Hortensia Coloma, Director of St. Henry de Osso Family Project, summed it best when she said; “I was joyful to see so many wonderful people with beautiful spirits!” The prevalent spirit of camaraderie, support and fun is what truly made the 6th Annual St. Henry de Osso Family Project Golf Scramble a huge success.
