BRINGING BACK MEMORIES

V. EXPANSION 1952-1976
THE SOCIETY BECOME 100 YEARS OLD

Hymn of the Centennial

Traveler of a century, Society!
In your spirit the Founder lives
He advances unceasingly

He opens roads, a witness of love.

An apostle, a motto, eight lives,

Entwined around a cross.  Prayer,

Teaching and sacrifice.

The glorious martyrdom of commitment,

With the strength and light of prayer,

To form women, to form the child,

Long live Christ in each heart.

The weariness and the dust of 100 years

Do not deter your march nor your enthusiasm

Traveler of a century, Society!

Worlds await your bread...

United, sisters always, faithful always,

We travel toward souls ardently.  Let us go

The world awaits, Christ calls,

May truth rule, may Love reign!

1952-1956:  SECOND PART OF M. ENRIQUETA SANZ'S ADMINISTRATION

The educative work continues expanding, the academic and professional preparation of the sisters intensifies, schools are updated and enrollments increase.

In 1956 the cause for the Beatification of our Founder Father has been recommended.  This had been interrupted for about 28 years.  The process “super non cultu” begins.

1957-1975:  M. PILAR SUZREZ-INCLAN,
SUPERIOR GENERAL FOR EIGHTEEN YEARS.

EIGHTH AND NINTH GENERALATES OF THE SOCIETY

The Holy Spirit, which gave the Church the Second Vatican Council, gifted the Society with a woman capable of accepting and putting into practice
its inspirations and principles.  The significant acts of this period were:

Expansion of the Society:  Spreading its wings there are 76 new houses, of which 13 are suppressed.  The Society goes to Colombia (1961) and to France (1961).  Some foundations were significant, like the one of Avila, which had been the great desire of the Sisters.

Closing the Houses in Cuba and Algeria:  we suffered the pain of having to leave the island of Cuba in 1961.  there we lost 6 Schools and one Social work,
but we left the seed of the Gospel in the Alumnae and in the hearts of the simple people.  The departure from Oran was also significant and could be compared
with the joy of the profession of the first African sister in Angola.

Generalate in Rome:  Since the Society is becoming universal, the central House is transferred to Rome, where the Juniorate Paul VI begins also to function.

Here the first two General Assemblies of the Society are celebrated 1967 and 1972.

Restructuring the Provinces of the Society in 1957

●   Spain:  The Province St. Teresa and Sacred Heart interchange the houses of Andalucia with those of Navarra, Rioja and Pais Vasco.

Portugal and Angola separate:  The former remains as the Province of Mary Immaculate and the latter becomes known as the Vice Province of Mary Queen, depending on the Generalate until 1964 when it becomes dependent on Portugal and in 1968 it becomes an independent Province.

●  USA and Nicaragua remain as the Province of St. Francis de Sales:  Mexico and Cuba continue as the Province of Fr. Henry de Osso.
The houses of Cuba are lost in 1961.

●  Argentina, Urugay and Paraguay:   Form the Province of St. Joseph.  Brazil becomes the Province of Our Lady of Fatima.  In 1966 the name is changed to Our Lady of Aparecida.  Venezuela and Colombia become first a Vice Province in 1966 and then the Province of the Heart of Mary.  Later in 1971 Chile becomes first a Delegation and then the Vice Province of the Virgin of Carmel, dependent for two years on the Generalate and after 1973 the Province of St. Joseph.

●  The houses of Italy, Montpellier and Barcelona-Granduxer comprise the delegation Saturnina Jassa, which begins to have a Delegate in 1969, and with its own regulations in 1975.

Renewal of the Constitutions:  A considerable number of uses and customs had been changed during the pre council stage and now a deeper renewal was needed, so in 1971 the new Constitutions were approved “ad experimentum”.

An extraordinary increase in Social Works:  Answering the call of the Church, 24 social works are founded, most of them in Latin America.

Advance in the Process Beatification:  In 1966 the Apostolic Process for the cause of Beatification opens in Tortosa.
M. Saturnina Jassa:  In 1967 her cause for Beatification begins and in 1973 her writings are approved.
Also in 1967 the remains of Mother Saturnina Jassa, Teresa Blanc and Teresa Pla are transferred to the Novitiate in Tortosa.
M. Mercedes Prat:  Her Cause for Beatification was introduced in 1969.

Important Publication:
1966: The Bulletin STJ takes the place of “Desde la Casa Madre”.
1968:  Letters of Our Founder
1969:  History of the Society
1974:  Documents of Perfection
