IN MEMORY
SR. ODETTE DAIGLE, STJ
Sr. Odette Daigle, STJ,
beloved member of the Society of St. Teresa of Jesus, died peacefully on July 1,
2009, after spending a day in the hospital where she had received the Sacrament
of the Sick. She had suffered from heart disease for years, but her infirmity
never kept her from enjoying life to the fullest. She was 93 years young.
Born in 1916, in Plattenville, Louisiana, the eighth of 10 children, Sr. Odette
spent much of her childhood in New Orleans. All of her brothers and sisters are
deceased, but she is survived by many nephews and nieces, and their children,
who love her dearly.
In 1930, at the age of 14, she entered the Society of St. Teresa of Jesus, and a
few years later began teaching at St. Louis Cathedral School in New Orleans,
where she herself had been a student; later she served as its principal for four
years. Beginning in 1954, Sr. Odette was part of the Society's foundation at
Colegio Teresiano in Managua, Nicaragua, where she was principal. In 1958 she
helped with another foundation in Jennings, Louisiana, and served there as
superior, principal, teacher, and provincial councilor. From 1961 until 1964 she
directed the novices in San Antonio, Texas; in 1964 she became the Provincial,
and three years later went to Rome after being appointed general councilor for
the Society. After returning from Rome in 1975, she continued serving as
superior, teacher, and provincial councilor in River Ridge, New Orleans and
Slidell, all in Louisiana. Sr. Odette retired in 1989, but continued serving the
community in New Orleans as superior until 2000; in 2005 she transferred to San
Antonio after the devastation of Katrina.
At St. Teresa's convent in San Antonio, Sr. Odette continued sharing her good
spirit, her wonderful zest for life and her gentle peaceful ways with all those
around her. Her sisters, family and friends, especially all who worked with her,
will miss her greatly, but we are all grateful for the gift of having known her.
